When we do this, our “light will break forth” as our righteousness and God’s glory is manifest. Nowadays we are inundated with news that captures story after story of tragic suffering and loss, and inoculation is almost inevitable. But God is aware of every incident, every ounce of pain people experience. And Jesus declared in one of His first sermons, quoting from Isaiah 61, that His ministry was to care for these exact people. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

If God the Father and Jesus care so deeply about addressing the needs of the hurting of the world, maybe I should follow their lead and likewise care. I may not be able to physically or emotionally remove their afflictions, but I can walk with them, empathize as I listen to their stories, pray with them, and in appropriate ways seek to offer some sort of physical assistance. May God grant us the wisdom to “weep with those who weep,” to use His resources for God-glorifying purposes, and to point people to the Savior who promises ultimate healing from every struggle.

Since I spend a lot of time in Africa through my mission work, I am constantly surrounded with suffering and hurting people, good folks who are in desperate situations, with needs that go well beyond their ability to address them.
