Trip Debrief #3 – Mombasa, Kenya

This is the third (and final) part in a series of trip reviews following a long and involved training time in three locations in Africa from February until early March. In this case, I was in Mombasa, coastal Kenya, March 1-6. My teammates headed home prior to this, so I was solo working with this Tyrannus Bible School network of church planters who were going to unreached parts of Somalia, southern Ethiopia, and NE Kenya – very difficult areas. I had been to this location working with coordinators Joseph and Safia for the past two years, helping previous groups receive our training.

This group was a bit different than in past years because it was made up of five different language groups (Omoro, Borana, Somali, Swahili, and English) and most of the participants were Muslim background believers (MBBs). Communication and interaction were particularly challenging (perhaps because of language, culture, young age, lack of experience, and other reasons). Joseph and Safia were very pleased with the training I offered, and assured me the group received the material well and grew much in their skills in handling God’s Word well.

Faces must be hidden to protect these dear souls who will be doing God’s work in difficult areas.

After the training each day, I met with students to hear their testimonies, answer any questions, or discuss together anything they wanted to talk about. This was a highlight of the experience as they eagerly shared with me about the work God has done and is doing in their lives, and I was able to offer encouragement and pray for each one. These testimonies are available upon request.

Monkeys visited each day as the “clean up crew” at the training site.
Boyka the camel had no problem with his picture being taken. See him smiling??!!
While I was roasty, toasty in Mombasa, the rest of the family was not so warm.
