I am so very thankful for the opportunity to train pastors globally. At the same time, at our recent Global Equipping Division workshop, we discussed the impact of travel stress due to the line of &#8220;work&#8221; we are in, both upon us and our families &#8211; physically, emotionally, mentally, relationally, spiritually, etc. It was so interesting hearing the similarities all of us experience since we are all traveling internationally a great deal and doing similar work. The work is so very significant, and we are blessed to be called to this, and yet it takes a significant toll on us in many ways. Our director for member care came and gave a helpful presentation on these issues, some of which I&#8217;d like to share with you. Perhaps some of you who travel frequently will find it helpful as well. Below are some notes from that session. Pressing on by God&#8217;s grace, Eric<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Factors contributing to stress and fatigue<o:p><\/o:p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/belzglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/stress.jpeg\" title=\"stress.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/belzglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/stress.jpeg\" alt=\"stress.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"line-height: 20.7999992370605px; font-size: 1em\">It has been documented that there is an increase in psychological and stress\/anxiety related disorders for frequent travelers. Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Dynamics of travel<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Adjustments \u2013 every transition\/trip involves mini-versions of the following (mini-culture shock): leaving, transition, entering, re-involvement. High transition lifestyle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Meetings<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Short cycle of transitions \u2013 leaving (we go to location mentally in prep), transition (sitting in airport, fatigue, waiting), entering (differences in environment and all the changes), re-involvement (begin feeling more comfortable after few days). Then we do the same thing all over.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Life has gone on while we are away. Family goes through adjustment and they have to shift based upon our schedule also.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Going through these adjustments has result of making us tired. Brain works much more resulting in exhaustion. Also emotional exhaustion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">A foot in two worlds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Unrelenting workloads<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Pile of work waiting for you after trip<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Jet lag<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Needs and expectations of others &#8211; People don\u2019t understand that travel is exhausting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">We love the work we do, and so adrenaline carries us through, but when we return we are exhausted, jetlagged and then have all the stuff to do that has piled up (make up emails, business items, fixing probs, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">We never fully transition overseas or back stateside. We lose relationships, lose track with culture to some extent, etc. Part of us doesn\u2019t want to re-engage (self-protection). But if no community or relationships, we will be in unhealthy place \u2013 can\u2019t be rootless, floating people. \u201cWe never re-enter, just touch and go.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/belzglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/stress-factors.jpg\" title=\"stress-factors.jpg\" style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/belzglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/stress-factors.jpg\" alt=\"stress-factors.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">It is essential we <strong>guard our hearts<\/strong> from problem areas:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Pride \u2013 life seems glamorous, travel is exciting<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Resentment \u2013 people don\u2019t get it, ask about our \u201cvacation.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Entitlement \u2013 When I come home, don\u2019t I deserve special treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Temptation \u2013 when we are tired, we are vulnerable. Immorality, anger, discouragement, yucky attitude<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Hero complex \u2013 give to pastors what they are hungry for, then we feel so important<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Martyr complex \u2013 poor me<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Discontentment \u2013 being at home is just plain boring.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Isolation \u2013 cocoon from others<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">False Guilt &#8211; not allowing ourselves a break, pushing ourselves too hard. The work will never get done. Need to walk away from it. \u201cI should be able to press through.\u201d Even Jesus took downtime.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<strong style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Frequent Travel Affects You:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Physically \u2013 stomach, digestion, head, back, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Emotionally \u2013 loneliness (need to learn to embrace it)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Spiritually \u2013 Times to spend with Lord can be so difficult. Must guard our hearts. Don\u2019t assume our soul is good just cause we are in spiritual leadership.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Psychologically \u2013 We see the struggle of humanity, needs, poverty \u2013 it affects us, and people in US totally don\u2019t understand. Need to do mini-debriefing after every trip.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Relationally \u2013 People don\u2019t even know we are away. Family impact is huge too.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/belzglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/crowd.jpg\" title=\"crowd.jpg\" style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/belzglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/crowd.jpg\" alt=\"crowd.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Traits which build resiliency<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Flexibility and adaptability \u2013 you won\u2019t decide many basics of your life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Optimism and sense of humor<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Communicativeness and good social support \u2013 easy to live so isolated, but not healthy. Communicate with a few close friends while on the road. Stay connected.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Tolerance for ambiguity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Willingness to tolerate hardship \u2013 don\u2019t think we deserve the bump to first class\u2026, can give away the upgrade.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Sense of purpose<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Humility<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Various ideas for thriving in the midst of frequent travel<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Make harder part of trip the first part, and easier part at the end.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Stay in close contact with family. Play \u201cgames\u201d together, skype, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Figure out what your limits are \u2013 1 wk or 3 wks or ?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Honor the amount of down time between trips you need<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Maintain exercise patterns\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Day before we leave and day after return \u2013 don\u2019t schedule anything.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Have travel clothes \u2013 don\u2019t wear them at other times. Have them ready to go. Keep toiletries packed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Only bring carry-on. Do not bring things for others.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">It is OK to spend more money \u2013 (eg. Stay alone in hotel if that helps you, even if more expensive; sign up for airline lounges; etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Figure out what will help us to be able to keep going.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Stay in hotel rather than in home with someone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Doing good devotionals, perhaps with spouse.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Bring yummy snacks from home.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Discovering differences in new places and learning new things adds to the joy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Worshipping with nationals. Try to be a part of an indigenous worship service.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Find rhythms with spouse. Spouse needs to give space day before leaving cause we have already \u201cleft\u201d mentally. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Recognize the impact of our travelling on our family. Go through days leading up, on trip and after and discuss all the transitions and effects upon family members.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Implement jetlag \u201cdiet\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Oftentimes jetlag is worse one direction or the other. Body organs respond to light, and they take time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Prepare yourself spiritually \u2013 ask God what specifically to focus on during trip. Mobilize your small prayer team.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Sunlight<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Remind yourself at the joy of our calling when you are in midst of struggle: 2 Cor. 4:1<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Dean Johnson \u2013 as entering plane to go overseas, he saluted and said, \u201cShowing up for service, Lord.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>How do you know when you are hitting a wall on travel:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Spouse tells us<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Mentally, when we are more tired than excited<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Apathy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Self-pity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Weariness, slower capacity to bounce back, band doesn\u2019t stretch back<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Resentment over mundane tasks back home<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">Irritability over period of time (days)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\">When I don\u2019t feel like going out \u2013 isolation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p
