I’ve recently been in close contact with a number of our African partners to hear about developments in their countries related with COVID restrictions, outbreaks, and the effect this has on their churches. Every country is different, but in general Africa is one of the least affected parts of the world.
Kenya has experienced a “second wave” of COVID outbreaks leading the president to pass increased restrictions. In many places of the country, only one weekly worship service is allowed, and all must wear masks and be socially distanced, as the pictures indicate. Brothers and sisters are discouraged by these increased restrictions, so pastors are doing the best they can to shepherd their flocks through these days.
However, I hear from our partners that in other parts of Kenya, restrictions are more relaxed, and other meetings are allowed, particularly in rural areas.
In Tanzania, President Magufuli asked church leaders to pray for seven days for the country to be free from COVID, and then he pronounced that there are no restrictions in meeting whatsoever. In fact, he encouraged meetings and worship. He said, “COVID is not bigger than Jesus!” Hearing this from my Tanzanian pastor friend is very encouraging.
In many parts of Africa, aid in the form of food and supplies has been sent from the West, leading to long lines of people waiting many hours to receive what their families need. It has been a blessing to be able to contribute to the dear friends I have in various parts of the continent, and through them to pass on practical assistance to those most in need in their communities.
It seems that in West Africa, in Togo and Ivory Coast for example, services are allowed to continue and they are asking us to return to our Pathways trainings as soon as possible. Our mission, ReachGlobal, is trying to proceed wisely through the many issues that must be considered in lifting travel restrictions. But I am praying fervently that by early 2021, I will be allowed to resume travel and training for our hungry brothers and sisters. Please join me in this prayer.
